- Server — The whole space — every channel we’ve got, all in one place.
- Channel — One room inside the server, usually built around one topic.
- DM — Direct Message — a private, one-on-one conversation.
- @mention — Typing @ plus a name to notify that specific person.
- Voice channel — An always-open audio room. Drop in, drop out, no scheduling.

How Worth Your Time Doesn’t Get Lost
A Discord channel is a bad long-term filing system — anything good said three weeks ago is already buried under whatever’s been posted since. So Worth Your Time gets treated the same way a Tuesday idea does once it’s real: someone eventually copies the good stuff out into something that actually lasts.
- Whenever it feels like enough has piled up — there’s no fixed schedule — anyone can volunteer to do a pass and copy the highlights into a running document on the shared Proton Drive, organized loosely by type: events, articles, books, watch-and-listen, other.
- This isn’t a permanent job. It rotates the same informal way anchoring does — whoever’s got ten minutes and feels like tidying up does it, and nobody’s tracking whose turn it is.
- The Discord channel stays the messy, ambient version. The Proton Drive document is the tidy, lasting one — the same relationship the shared drive already has with every other channel.
- It’s a natural, ongoing companion to the curated reading list on the 5 Steps page — that one’s small and deliberately stable; this one’s bigger, messier, and built by whoever’s around.
what about stuff we want to keep?
Discord is for conversation. The shared drive — a shared Proton Drive folder — is for anything that needs to stick around longer than a chat scrollback: sign-up sheets, running notes on an idea, a skills list, whatever a gathering or a channel needs to build on over time. If Discord is the conversation, the drive is the record — the place things live once they’re more than a passing thought.
We picked Proton specifically, not just any free drive. Part of what this whole project is working against is a set of systems that profit from people not knowing or relying on each other — and that includes the quiet, ordinary way most free tools pay for themselves by mining what you put into them. Proton Drive is built by a company whose whole business model is the opposite of that: end-to-end encryption by default, based outside U.S. jurisdiction, no scanning your files to build an ad profile. It costs a little more friction than just using whatever’s already on everyone’s phone — that’s a fair trade for not quietly handing a tech company everything this community writes down about itself.
You get access to it the same way you get access to Discord — through whoever invited you. The link lives pinned in the Front Porch channel once you’re in. If a specific channel is actively using a document from it, the link usually gets dropped right there too, so the conversation and the file stay connected.
